New Feature: Picture of the Week

Time for a new feature here on The Cat's Meow. The title is pretty self-explanatory. It's a picture. There will be one a week. Still with me? Most of the time it will be a photo somehow related to FatCat Radio or maybe it'll just be something silly or random. Either way here we go...

PICTURE OF THE WEEK 5/30/10

Source: Bashful Puppy @ Twitter

Nashville Pussy is wrapping up a marathon tour of the USA. Their Twitter account has been a treasure chest of great behind the scenes pics. The photo above is a fine example. You don't mess with Zohan, Texas, or Nashville Pussy's beer!

==========
A reminder - we are ALWAYS looking for a little help when it comes to content for the blog. Artists, listeners, supporters, please submit any news relating to FatCat Radio artists or independent music in general. Please do so via EMAIL and EMAIL only. (contact info) And yes... that includes pictures for the new feature !

The Skinny: 5/30/10

A quick look at various bits of news, links, & other stuff from the world of FatCat Radio.

- The Indigo Lounge remains on indefinite hiatus but there have been some recent rumblings from Mrs Angry Swede that it's return may be on the horizon.

- There will not be a new edition of 'The Swede Interviews' on this week's BIG Show. Just a regular ol' BS. Less talk = more independent music that ROCKS!

- After countless changes to the format of The Cat's Meow I finally decided on going with the "7 days on the main page" option. So scroll down for the past week's worth of posts. Click the 'older posts' option for um, older posts. Click the 'archives' link in the right hand column for past months.

- It's almost here! Big Rock in the Backyard aka what I'm calling the unofficial FatCat Festival of ROCK 2.

- Expect some special programming this weekend relating to the above concert. (Can you say RHINO-DOG-TEETH Weekend?)

- Riotgod offers up the inside out as to what's been going on with the band lately including: record labels, new shows, and new music.

- The most recent additions to the FatCat Radio artist roster include: The Naddiks, ZAMARRO, HMF (aka Copper Lion), and The Saints And Sinners.

Classic Rock Magazine: Back In Black Redux

Congrats to long time FatCat Radio artists Broken Teeth and American Dog for being chosen to be a part of this month's Classic Rock Magazine's free AC/DC tribute cd.

"We’re calling our free CD Back In Black Redux – and it features all-new, never-before-heard, re-recordings of each and every one of the songs from AC/DC’s seminal 1980 album! Over the decades, the tracks on Back In Black have become so ingrained in the ears, hearts and groins of rock fans that they’ve virtually become part of our DNA. There is no arguing with the songs or the performances on that album. So when Classic Rock asked some of our favourite riff merchants to reinterpret landmark power-chuggers like Rock And Roll Ain’t Noise Pollution or Have A Drink On Me, they were naturally nervous. But eventually a brave and sturdy line-up of wheelers and dealers took up the gauntlet and re-recorded each of Back In Black’s 10 tracks exclusively for Classic Rock. Back In Black Redux might just be the best CD Classic Rock has ever given away for free.

Here’s the full list of artists:

10. Rock And Roll Ain’t

As a celebration of AC/DC’s upcoming appearance at the Download festival, our tribute CD delivers in spades. Back In Black Redux comes free with the July 2010 edition of Classic Rock – watch out for Them Crooked Vultures on the cover. The issue is on sale now.

-Source: Classic Rock Magazine

I'm always a little leery of tribute cds. And I'm always extra leery of covers of my all-time favorite band in the history of the world but... even I gotta admit this is a pretty cool concept. I have heard American Dog's take on "Given The Dog" and it's fantastic. Best description would be AC/DC by way of ZZ Top & American Dog. And knowing Broken Teeth's chops and Jason McMaster's incredible vocal abilities, I'm sure the Teeth's take on "Money Honey" is kick-ass as well.

Good friend of the station (and frequent visitor of the Fancy Live Blog Wednesday nights during The BIG Show), "O.M.O.M." has a couple of bylines in this particular issue as well. 5/26/10 BIG Show recap

NEW TRACKS: Rocker Lips

Back to the regular ol' BS format tonight after several weeks of gimmick filled shows. Played some new stuff from the great new cd Needle In The Groove from Kansas City's Rocker Lips. Listeners from 4 countries tuned in tonight. (You sure my mic level wasn't "too hot"?!) Thanks for the many requests & to Paddy from Ireland (again!) for the very long distance live call on the BS Hotline.

ReverbNation Spotlight: Mail Order Miracle

Spotlight on: Mail Order Miracle (Brookville, Indiana).

reverbnation.com/mailordermiracle

"Fans say that Mail Order Miracle combines the funky groove of Sublime and 311, the powerful Grunge sound of Stone Temple Pilots and Nirvana , and the unexpected musical style of Primus, Incubus and Pink Floyd, all in a fresh and totally unique way.

Mail Order Miracle formed in 2007 in a quiet town in Indiana and was quickly recognized as an up and coming act within the region as they began to look toward the bright lights of metropolitan cities to connect with a more vast audience. The group is currently writing new material with their new drummer Chris Haas.

OUT: Soundclick IN: ReverbNation

As of today FatCat On Demand is now powered exclusively by ReverbNation.com.

While the On Demand portion of the FatCat Radio Network gathers nowhere near the number of hits or listens as the On Air stream, it has been at the core of the station since Day 1. I've been a big fan of the site ReverbNation for a couple years now and have been encouraging all of our artists to get signed up over there. ReverbNation remains committed to independent music and has a TON of great features. Widgets! Widgets! Widgets!

Soundclick.com provided the content for On Demand for almost 7 years. While still a robust site (and so much more reliable than their early days), I haven't liked the direction they been going now for quite some time. New quality rock or blues have been hard to come by. Plus...the last two virus/malware attacks on the main FatCat computer came directly from the Soundclick website. That right there is reason enough for the change.

Click on On Demand, including pages 2, 3, 4 - enjoy the music (stop/start/fast forward/rewind/download where available) and let me know what you think !

======================================================================

If you're a FatCat Radio artist and your band is not included on FatCat On Demand powered by ReverbNation drop us a line with your link. You must allow us to add you to our "label" in order to be included. See FatCat Radio Network @ ReverbNation for the current list of artists found on our new and improved On Demand programming.

5/19/10 BIG Show recap

*ALL REQUEST SPECIAL*

The heavily hyped first ever *All Request Special* edition of The BIG Show turned out (much to my surprise) to be quite a success !! A total of 33 requests aired tonight - easily the most ever I've played on one show. And a "record" total of listener call ins on the BS Hotline. Six people screwed up the courage to go live on air with yours truly. Donnie from Oregon, Brinton from Colorado, Kat from Oregon, Matt from Ohio, Billy from Georgia, and last but certainly not least, Paddy from Ireland. Yup, the 1st ever truly international live call on The BIG Show.

Thanks for playin' by my many rules (request guidelines). Was definitely a fun show and something we'll try again in the future. After three straight weeks of gimmicky shows it's back to the regular ol' format for next week's show. Tonight's playlist with artist links and a replay of the Fancy Live Blog can be found after the jump. (Click the READ MORE link below.)

The BIG Show: * All Request Special *

The BIG Show: *ALL REQUEST SPECIAL*
Wednesday May 19, 2010
7pm - 10pm CDT

This week's BIG Show is gonna be a bit different. Announcing the 1st ever *All Request Special*. Listener requests have been a big part of my show for years. During a 'normal' show I usually set aside the entire 2nd Hour to let my listeners program the show. Well on Wednesday May 19, 2010, the loyal BIG Show listeners will be responsible for the whole damn three hours!!

The only music I will program is incidental background instrumental music provided by various FatCat artists. If no requests are received you're gonna hear a lot of vocal-less tunes or a lot of space filling (mindless jabbering) by yours truly!!! So don't be shy, get those requests in and help power the *All Request Special*.

The same request methods as a regular BIG Show will be in place. I will only play tracks from the current active BIG Show playlist. Click the yellow request button found on the On Air page (during show hours) to review song choices. Call in or submit the online form. In order for this *All Request Special* to work there's gotta be some ground rules. I wanna try to be as fair as possible to all listeners / artists. This is meant to be fun - so please don't try to circumvent the simple guidelines by requesting artists or songs not on the current active BIG Show playlist . There are 1,200+ songs by 150+ artists for you to select from. Please do not flood the phonelines or my inbox by requesting the same band or song countless times.

PLEASE ADHERE TO THE FOLLOWING GUIDELINES.
 • Requests are not accepted via the Fancy Live Blog, email, Facebook.
 • Requests taken during show hours only.
 • Each listener is allowed up to five (5) requests.
 • Do not select more than one (1) song per artist.
 • An artist will be played a maximum of three (3) times during the show.

That means if three different listeners request the same band, that is the MAXIMUM number of tracks I will play for that band during the show. Once an artist is 'maxed out', I will announce as such on air. That means do not request them for the remainder of the show.

 • Phone requests (877-217-8472) take priority. I want as many live on air requests as possible.
 • The toll free BIG Show Hotline (877-217-8472) will be available all show long. If you call and get a recorded message, a busy signal or no answer try again. Do NOT leave a voicemail.
 • Do NOT leave a voicemail. If you do? You just cost me $0.50 & your request will not be played.
 • IMPORTANT: If you hear me talking live on air, please wait until I'm done before dialing. Wait until the music begins playing. Do not call (877-217-8472) if I am talking - it causes all kinds of havoc with the delay, the sound levels, etc.

Remember, I will not be programming anything during the entire show other than 'background' or 'dialing music' as I wait between requests. So to avoid an early end to the show or a complete train wreck - get those requests in early and often! It's an *All Request Special* this week on The BIG Show. Tune in early and help program 3 hours of independent music that ROCKS!

May 15, 2010

The Skinny: 5/15/10

A quick look at various bits of news, links, & other stuff from the world of FatCat Radio.

- Finally, after years of threatening it... I'm gonna do it. The May 19th edition of The BIG Show will be an ALL REQUEST SPECIAL. No requests? Well, then it's gonna be an awfully quiet 3 hours! Look for a post here on the blog prior to the show with the guidelines of the All Request Special. Not exactly the guidelines I mentioned on air last week but guidelines nonetheless. I'm anticipating a trainwreck but maybe I'll be surprised. I do hope to get several calls on the BS Hotline. Let's have fun with it and please, please, please follow the special request guidelines (coming soon) that will be in place for that night. The BIG Show airs Wednesday nights from 7pm to 10pm CDT.

- A scheduling conflict requires a slight re-arranging of the air dates of the next few editions of The A'Swepe Hour From Somewhere In Texas. Still Saturdays, still 10AM CDT start time. And still never an hour in length! The reconfigured TAHFSIT schedule is as follows: May 22nd, May 29th, June 12th, June 26th.

- Monday Marathon will not air May 17th. The Auto-Pilot will be running things instead.

- My Son The Bum is featured in the current edition of Australian Musician Magazine. A great article that serves as a fine introduction to the somewhat uniquely constructed band. And as always when it comes to M.S.T.B. - FREE downloads!

- Sacred 13 is working on the follow up to Tattered Memories, one of my five favorite CDs of 2009. You can hear some teasers from the as of yet untitled album due out in late 2010 as well as see some behind the scenes / in studio stuff by checking out this 10 minute video.

ReverbNation Spotlight: Last Stone Cast

Spotlight on: Last Stone Cast (Ohio / North Carolina).

www.reverbnation.com/laststonecast

"LSC is Scott McConnell, on vocals and lead guitar, Jon Epstein on bass and Billy Morrison on drums and backing vocals this dynamic trio turns out an astonishing and uncommon sound. As staples in the Ohio music scene, Last Stone Cast has built a steady and loyal local fan base that has quickly spread across the US and in Europe. Formed in 2007, Last Stone Cast has combined their unique no holds barred sound with an unwavering stage performance at a level that makes this outfit stand out amongst the formulaic rock that is more expected than surprising and speaks volumes about their combined talent as it takes most others three times as long to reach this level of perfection. The one with a listener programming the 1st 15 minutes of the show...the one with a nasty thunderstorm threatening to kick me off air virtually the entire show...the one with a (delayed) lengthy phone in from the entire Dave Rude Band... the one with an extra half an hour.

Thanks for listening USA, Canada, Germany, Ireland, and France. Thanks for the requests and for those that hung out in the Fancy Live Blog. Gonna be something a little different next week. REVIEW: The Demon Beat - "Shit, We're 23"

Artist: The Demon Beat
Album: Shit, We're 23
Released: November 2009
Available: BIG BULLET RECORDS (physical cd) / Bandcamp (downloads)

The trio that make up The Demon Beat (Shepherdstown, West Virginia) may be twenty somethings but musically they're old souls. Their current release Shit We're 23 provides ample proof. In an age of Pro-Tools, samples, multiple effects, etc, The Demon Beat simply plug in and play rock n roll the way it's meant to be played - LOUD, raw, and most importantly, REAL. While their overall sound is kind of a grab bag of 60's / 70's rock, punk, blues, and soul influences it definitely comes across as genuine. There's no faking the intensity and feeling found throughout Shit We're 23. Playing honest real rock is nice and all but doesn't matter much if a band doesn't have the chops or the songs to make it worth your while. Luckily, The Demon Beat have plenty of both up their collective sleeves.

Stand out tracks include: 'Millionaire', 'Memory Ain't Enough', 'This Is No Fun', and the incredible 'Bad Man'. The Demon Beat are at their best when in attack or snarl mode. Mellow or groove band mode (ala 'You Got It' or 'Can't You')? Not so much. The aggressiveness of the rest more than makes up for the occasional less than 'devilish' tune.

Track Listing:

1.Got You Movin' 03:47
2.Millionaire 04:31
3.Memory Ain't Enough 05:23
4.You Got It 06:14
5.Crawl 04:22
6.This Is No Fun 02:40
7.Make My Move 02:37
8.The Game 04:27
9.Can't You 05:34
10.Bad Man 06:03

Got You Movin' by BIG BULLET RECORDS

Bottom line: Good 'Shit' from the diabolical West Virginia Three.

Swede's rating: 3.5 out of 5

5=Excellent | 4=Very Good | 3=Decent | 2=Pretty Bad | 1=Garbage

5/5/10 BIG Show recap

NEW ARTIST: Rocken Factory
CONTEST WINNER: Kat from Oregon

Kind of a strange one tonight! Not the biggest turnout (blame Cinco de Mayo?) but we still managed to have listeners from USA, Canada, Germany and the Philippines. Congrats to the Missing Link contest winner, Kat. Her prize? She gets to program the 1st 15 minutes of next week's BIG Show !! Should be getting a call from one of the most requested bands next week too. Another 'gimmicky' show is coming soon as well. Until then - keep clicking on the cat and keep supporting independent music!!!

"Rock and roll. Pure, honest and simple. Guitar, bass and drums.

This is what rock music is about, and Rawmania from Sweden knows it's that simple. Being around for over ten years playing their songs, doing their thing and just having a great time, they know how powerful rock is and how easy it is to love.

Good rock music gets into your veins, in your soul and in to your dancing shoes. It makes you wanna scream and shout and it makes you wanna raise hell.

- IndieShows is baaaack. You might have heard about it when Billy from IS called the BIG Show Hotline last week. If you're in a band looking to post your gigs or if you're an indie music fan looking for shows in your area i.ndiesho.ws (not a typo!) is the place to be.

- Cheers to Jimmy from Virginia. Our newest Fat-Mart model.
