REVIEW: 7th Day Creeps - 'Meat The Creeps'

Artist: 7th Day Creeps
Album: Meat The Creeps
Released: October 2010
Available: Kunaki.com

Meat The Creeps is the long anticipated follow up to Port Huron Michigan's 7th Day Creeps excellent debut Does This Taste Funny? If you're not familiar with The Creeps they describe themselves and their sound as "old school punk attitude with a nod to 80's metal and a splash of sleazy b-grade horror imagery". In the years since their first album the band went thru a few personal changes (bass / guitar), & picked up a new record label (Jib Machine Records) but thankfully have kept that old school attitude.

I mention the 1st album 'cause it's a tough act to follow in my opinion. Meat is a good album but falls a bit short of the consistency of Does This Taste Funny?. There's a bit of an under produced feel too. I know it's punk rock but the overall sound is kind of muddy and nothing like the clean sound of a 7th Day Creeps live gig. The album starts off strong with the anthem like "Gimme Gimme Rock N Roll" and the driving "Wolfsblood". "Somebody Get Me A Drink" is another winner and good example of the band's clever lyrics as well as a fine showcase of Jimmy The Creep's vocal style. It's hard to describe other than he sings with a lot of passion and it's what initially drew me into the band.

After the strong start things suffer a bit with some filler material (Was a cover of The Munsters theme song really needed?). And as I've stated before I'm not a big fan of a singer sharing vocals on an album - especially when I'm such a fan of the singer!! That being said drummer Cheech does a fine job on the tribute to a couple hardcore fans "Pat n' George". Bassist Eddie Lee on the Jeffery Dahmer song? Not so much.

A few more forgettable tracks before the last (and best) credited song on the album. A track like "Die Like A Rockstar" with it's name dropping of dead rock & punk stars could easily end up being a bit of a novelty song if not done right. Definitely not the case here as The Creeps hit a home run singing about many of their fallen idols. This is the song that's been getting the most airplay on FatCat Radio. I have a feeling it would be a great song to do in concert as well. The album finishes off with a couple untitled covers that are done very well (with noticeably better production) and are harmless fun.

Track Listing
1. Gimme Gimme Rock N' Roll
2. Wolfsblood
3. Somebody Get Me A Drink
4. Dangerous Game
5. Pat n' George
6. Munsters
7. Jeffery
8. She's So Goth
9. Take Your Chance
10. Die Like A Rockstar

Bottom line: A fine slab of beef that could of been even better with some of the fat trimmed.

WANTED: New station IDs

Now more than ever since the redesign/big change last month. A little help please?

Station IDS wanted

One final note....it doesn't need to be some big production. I have a feeling that's what "scares off" the MANY of you who continually promise to record a spot and never come through. All you gotta do is call the above number & leave a message. Simple as that. Record several at once by leaving some space between messages. Bands be sure to include your website. Listeners be sure to include your location. Any questions leave a comment below or send me an email.

Jason McMaster: Hall of Famer

A bit belated as the news broke a few months ago but a BIG congrats goes out to friend of the station, Jason McMaster for his upcoming induction into the South Texas Music Walk Of Fame!!!

"Heavy metal screamer Jason McMaster (Dangerous Toys, Broken Teeth) is set to make Texas history, as the first metal artist honored by the ‘South Texas Music Walk Of Fame’ in his hometown of Corpus Christi.

A vocalist, bassist, guitarist, and songwriter with two gold-certified records under his belt, McMaster is notorious for being one of the busiest musicians in rock and roll. His rock and roll resume dates back to 1982, when he fronted influential progressive metal band Watchtower, later moving on to make headlines with the southern sleaze rock act Dangerous Toys. In recent years, Jason has been channeling his talent into the Austin-based hard rock act Broken Teeth, having released five albums since the band’s formation in 1999; along with two albums from his NWOHB influenced band Ignitor, and various tribute bands. His impact on the Texas rock and metal scene was previously recognized in 1998, with an induction into the Texas Music Hall Of Fame.

The South Texas Music Walk of Fame honors six new Texas artists every year, in a ribbon-cutting ceremony that kickstarts the annual WaterStreet Market Music & Arts Festival in Corpus Christi, Texas. McMaster will officially be inducted in June 2011."

Can I get an amen? Well deserved 'Pastor McMaster of the Church of Disaster'. That kind of honor sure the hell trumps earning FatCat Radio's 'CD of the Year' award in '08 (Electric) and '10 (Viva La Rock Fantastico!). Speaking of Broken Teeth, look for the band's Summer 2011 tour dates to be announced soon.

ReverbNation Spotlight: BOSS 302

BOSS 302 (Deptford, NJ)
"BOSS 302 is a 3 piece hard rock band from South Jersey signed to Toil Records out of Philly who just released their debut CD in September 2010. The band describes its sound as straight forward with influences ranging from the slow & heavy riffs of Black Sabbath & Kyuss, the intensity of Motorhead, to the stoner rock grooves of Queens of the Stone Age & Fu Manchu. With brothers Larry Lerro as the bassist & lead singer and Mike as the drummer it makes up a machine tight rhythm section. John Modugno is the lead guitarist and also singer which really completes the solid foundation of the band. Their no compromise approach from the beginning has lead them to be a true, authentic hard rock band. One of the band's real strengths has always been its live shows so be sure to look out for upcoming dates! "

Snowmageddon 2011

UPDATE: 2/2 4:15AM - Back on the air.

Stream is offline until the (literal) blizzard is over. Power outage a distinct possibility tonight. 16 inch (and counting) drifts in the driveway. On the bright side... I'm taking a snow day tomorrow !!

A BLIZZARD WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 3 PM CST /4 PM EST/
WEDNESDAY.

* TIMING...ACCUMULATING SNOW WILL CONTINUE THROUGH THE OVERNIGHT
HOURS INTO THE EARLY MORNING HOURS WEDNESDAY. SCATTERED LAKE
EFFECT SNOW SHOWERS ARE LIKELY TO LINGER OVER NORTHEAST ILLINOIS
WEDNESDAY MORNING BEFORE MOVING INTO NORTHWEST INDIANA WEDNESDAY
AFTERNOON.

* ACCUMULATIONS...SNOW WILL BE HEAVY AT TIMES WITH ACCUMULATION
RATES REACHING OR EXCEEDING 1 TO 2 INCHES PER HOUR. STORM
TOTAL SNOWFALL OF 10 TO 16 INCHES IS LIKELY TOWARD ROCKFORD
AND DIXON. THE HEAVIEST SNOWFALL TOTALS ARE LIKELY DOWNWIND OF
LAKE MICHIGAN IN THE CHICAGO METROPOLITAN AREA AND INTO
NORTHWEST INDIANA WHERE 12 TO 20 INCHES OF SNOW IS LIKELY...
WITH POSSIBLE LOCALIZED TOTALS UP TO TWO FEET.

* WINDS...NORTHEAST WINDS FROM 25 TO 35 MPH...WITH WIND GUSTS OF
45 TO 55 MPH. EVEN STRONGER WINDS ARE LIKELY NEAR THE IMMEDIATE
LAKE MICHIGAN LAKE SHORE WITH SUSTAINED WINDS OF 30 TO 40 MPH
AND GUSTS OCCASIONALLY OVER 60 MPH.

* BLIZZARD CONDITIONS...STRONG WINDS COMBINED WITH SEVERE BLOWING
AND DRIFTING SNOW WILL RESULT IN TRUE WHITE OUT
CONDITIONS...PARTICULARLY IN OPEN AREAS.

* THUNDERSTORMS...ISOLATED SNOW-PRODUCING THUNDERSTORMS MAY RESULT
IN LOCALIZED INTENSE SNOWFALL RATES. IT IS NOT UNCOMMON FOR
SNOWFALL RATES TO EXCEED 4 INCHES PER HOUR IN THUNDER SNOW
MAKING TRAVEL NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE. IN ADDITION...SOME OF THE
THUNDERSTORMS HAVE BEEN PRODUCING AND COULD STILL PRODUCE SOME
SMALL HAIL.

* TRAVEL...ROAD CONDITIONS WILL BE TREACHEROUS. DO NOT TRAVEL
UNLESS IT IS AN EMERGENCY...AND EVEN THEN REALIZE THAT DRIVING
IN A BLIZZARD IS PUTTING YOUR LIFE AT RISK. VISIBILITIES ARE SO
POOR IN OPEN AREAS THAT MOTORISTS COULD BECOME DISORIENTED AND
UNABLE TO EVEN SEE BEYOND THE HOOD OF THEIR CARS.

* POWER OUTAGES...STRONG AND GUSTY WINDS WILL CONTINUE TO RESULT
IN NUMEROUS POWER OUTAGES. IN ADDITION...THE ADVERSE CONDITIONS
COULD MAKE IT DIFFICULT TO RESTORE POWER.
